Woods delighted with “beyond special” Ryder Cup wildcard pick

Tiger Woods has revealed that being picked as a wildcard by US captain Jim Furyk for the US Ryder Cup team felt “beyond special”, according to a report on the Independent.

Woods was named alongside Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau as the first three wildcards after they finished 9th, 10th and 11th in qualifying.

42-year-old Woods has been in good form in recent months and had hope that he could be picked for the Ryder Cup team.

However, just ten months after returning to the sport, he was not even dreaming of making such a quick rise and he has repeated many times about how thankful he is to even be playing golf.

Woods had to undergo multiple surgeries on his back and that left him almost unable to walk one year ago, but he has worked hard and he is now getting back to his best form.

Woods said:

I made my first team at Valderrama and it was a great learning experience to see the passion that one of our late, great team leaders in Payne Stewart showed for the event.

He made me understand how important the Ryder Cup is and from that moment on I always wanted to be part of each and every team.

I haven’t been part of the team playing-wise for six years. I served as vice-captain a couple of years ago and that was absolutely incredible to be part of the team, to try to help these young guys in any way I could.

This year, to be able to play again is beyond special.

This is the eighth time that Woods has been picked for the US Ryder Cup team in his career and this arguably is the most special one to him.
